Will My PCIP Coverage End Under the Affordable Care Act?

Beginning December 31, 2013, coverage for pre-existing health conditions will no longer be provided under the federally-funded Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP).

Enrollees are strongly advised to sign up for new insurance coverage by December 15 to avoid any coverage gaps. If you enroll before December 15, your insurance coverage will begin on January 1, 2014. If you enroll after December 15, your coverage will begin no earlier than February 1.

What Are My New Options for Pre-Existing Health Insurance Coverage in North Carolina?

When the new healthcare law was signed in 2010, PCIP was created as a temporary program to provide individual health insurance coverage to uninsured individuals with pre-existing health conditions.

Although PCIP coverage is now ending, you can rest assured knowing that no insurance company in the new Health Insurance Marketplace can turn you down for individual health insurance due to a pre-existing condition.

Some exceptions will apply, so be sure to visit our FAQs page on health insurance for pre-existing conditions for additional information.
